Library collection and development
Part of the role Mrs Conrick plays as the Teacher Librarian is purchasing books for the library. These books are then added to the library catalogue so that they can be borrowed by students and teachers.
Books are purchased through a variety of means. An annual budget is allocated to the library for purchases and administrative costs. Books are purchased from local bookstores, book suppliers, online and at department stores.
Our library also relies on Scholastic Book Club rewards and our annual school Book Fair. The library earns 20% in Scholastic Rewards on all Book Club orders and book fair purchases to help us obtain free books and additional learning resources. One Reward = One Dollar. Rewards can be used to pay or part-pay for quality picture books, chapter books and non-fiction books from Scholastic. It is a library priority each year to purchase the books nominated by the Children's Book Council of Australia for the CBCA Awards.
It is necessary for purchases to be made often to ensure that the library contains titles that are up-to-date and interesting to students. There is a suggestion box in the library where students can place suggestions for books they would like purchased. Mrs Conrick uses these suggestions once a term to determine some of the purchases she makes. The library also accepts and appreciates donation of books from the community.
